The use of Polypodium leucotomos, a species of fern, has been reported to be beneficial for autoimmune diseases and is used in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, and psoriasis, and for prevention of polymorphic light eruption, sunburn, and squamous cell carcinoma. Clinical research has shown that it has antioxidant and photoprotective properties and taken orally provides protection against the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and other sources. Its anti-tumor effects were alluded to nearly 50 years ago.
