Methylsulphonylmethane, or MSM has been present in the oceans, from microscopic plankton, soil and atmosphere of our planet for eons and is absorbed by plants and consumed by animals. MSM is part of nature’s great cycle, upon which all life depends. It is a derivative if dimethsulfoxide (DMSO), and is an organic sulphur mineral which has remarkable therapeutic properties, especially for the healing of injuries, connective tissue and tissue repair. It can also help to detoxify the body on a cellular level and stop parasites adhering to the gut wall. MSM helps to nourish the hair, skin and nails, relieve pain and inflammation, reduce allergy problems and promote gastrointestinal health. It has also been found to aid immune function, especially autoimmune diseases such as asthma, lupus, food intolerances, arthritis, Scleroderma and Fibromyalgia to name but a few. There have been reports of benefits to patients with heartburn, arthritis, lung problems, migraines and muscle pain. MSM strengthens the lungs and helps regulate the fluid that covers the surface of the airways, improving oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, helping those with emphysema or asthma. In additional to this it relieves allergies to foreign proteins including food, pollens, house dust mite, animal hair, etc.
Although MSM or Sulphur is naturally occurring in foods, such as fresh fish, meat, plants, and fruit, it is eliminated by even moderate processing, including drying or heating. Since most Westerners today eat considerable amount of processed food, MSM is normally either not present at all or present only in very small amounts in the typical diet. Most people therefore would probably benefit from natural Sulphur supplements.
MSM affects the protein membrane of the cells, making them soft and permeable. The increase permeability allows nutrition and oxygen to flow into our cells and toxins to leave via the cell walls. This means that our bodies will better utilise the nutritional supplements we are now taking. Without MSM, toxins can be trapped within the cells causing many unnecessary diseases. MSM facilitates the detoxification of the body from the heavy metals that can be trapped in our brain cells, on down to fungi in our toenails and all things in between, including Candida/thrush, whilst speeding wound healing.
Its beauty benefits are well known, due to increased collagen synthesis, it reduces wrinkles, cracking skin, scar tissue (even hardening of the arteries), causing skin, hair and nails to grow faster and healthier. It regenerates collagen and soft tissue, such as connective tissue, ligaments, tendons and cartilage, arteries, making it invaluable for sports injuries. It prevents cells from becoming rigid, softens/elasticizes tissue, whilst increasing blood circulation, energy, alertness, mental calmness and the ability to concentrate (as well as helping to control Alzheimer’s disease). It alleviates constipation and coats intestinal tract so parasites lose ability to adhere.
For best results take MSM before meals. Dosage 1000 to 4000mg per day (in capsules or powder)- should be taken with a buffered vitamin C for maximum absorption. As MSM is a powerful detoxer, it is best to start with 1000mg per day and build up slowly, once detox symptoms have gone to 2000-4000mg per day. Those on a detox diet can build up to 6000mg a day. Safe for children at half dose and very effective on animals (originally used on race horses to lesson or treat injuries). Apart from a possible detox reaction (which is good), no contra indications known.
Contraindications: People allergic to chemical sulphur are normally not allergic to this organic sulphur form, but should be careful. In some people, it may cause bleeding (of the nose) and should be used with caution with anti-coagulants. Discontinue in these cases. In some people, diarrhoea and bloating/gas is experienced, which may stop when detox symptoms subside. People with high blood pressure may find their blood pressure normalising, which could mean that their current dose of medication can become too high and need to be adjusted.
